Car Insurance Under 25

It doesn’t take a genius to know that finding affordable car insurance can be difficult when you are under 25. Most auto insurance companies charge higher rates because of a person's age. A lack of years of driving experience coupled with statistics that indicate that a higher number of accidents are caused by younger individuals conspire to make insurance rates high for drivers under the age of 25. While I myself am no longer under 25, when shopping for car insurance for my kids, I was blown away by some of the quotes I received. I immediately set out looking for ways we could save money on our auto insurance. If you are searching for a way to get lower rates on car insurance under 25 years of age, then consider the tips below.

Take a Driving Course
One way to get a lower rate on car insurance is to take a driving course. These courses teach you all of the basics of driving and car safety that you may or may not already know.  They also provide you with a certificate of completion that you can present to the car insurance companies so that you can receive a safe driver discount on your policy. Although it may sound unnecessary to some, it is well worth the investment of your time and money to potentially save hundreds on your annual auto insurance policy.

Be a College Student or Get Good Grades
Many insurance companies will offer you cheaper car insurance under 25 years of age if you are a full time college student or enrolled in classes. They will also offer you a lower rate if you are a high school student who is consistently making good grades. They view these types of individuals as more responsible and mature, and reward them with small discounts on their rates.  If you are a student or taking classes, make sure you inquire about any student discounts you may be eligible for.

Have Good Credit
Almost all car insurance companies check your credit report.  Your credit report is a reflection of your stability and factors in to how insurers assess you in terms of risk.  The insurance industry has also produced studies that conclude that people with lower credit scores are more likely to file insurance claims.  If you're under 25, you may not have an extensive credit history, but if you do have credit accounts, paying them consistently on time will show that you are responsible and may get you a lower car insurance rate.

Look Into Further Discounts
There are additional discounts often available for car insurance under 25 as well. For instance, you can receive discounts for driving a car rated higher for safety.  Having anti-theft or security devices such as alarms can qualify you for a discount.  Safety features such as automatic seat belts and air bags installed on your vehicle can also result in lower rates. All of things combine to make you a lower risk and provide you with cheaper auto insurance premiums.

Be Added to an Existing Policy
Another great way to get a cheaper rate is to be added to your parent’s preexisting car insurance policy. This allows you to take advantage of the years of safe driving they have under their belt and the steady relationship they have had with your parents throughout the years. While the policy will still most likely be expensive, it will be a little easier on the wallet then before.

Getting a better rate on car insurance under 25 years of age can be difficult but it is not impossible. There are a wide variety of things that you can try in order to negotiate a lower rate, starting with the tips above. You could see a significant savings on your car insurance every year with a little effort.
